Chicks

more news from the chicken frontier..... remember this beautiful chick?
It grows very fast, you can almost see the feathers grow, it's amazing how quick that goes! It's a spicy chick, bright and very quick too. We so hope it's a girl, 'cause we aren't able to keep it when it's a rooster. Judging from it's behaviour it probably is a rooster, but fingers crossed!

It's two weeks young now, too bad it was the only chick that hatched from the first batch of eggs. It's in our house from day one, because the mom had five more eggs to take care of and those were due to hatch about 10 days after the first chick was born. If we would have let the chick with her mom, mom would have given up on the other eggs.

Nera (mommy) did a fine job, 4 eggs hatched and she's doing everything a mommy chick is supposed to do:
(one chick is still somewhere under her wings)
If you look closely you can still see the 'egg- tooth' on their little beaks. After a day or so it's gone. These four are a different kind than the one we have in the house. These are "Wyandotte" small chickens and the one in the house is a "Vorwerk" chick.

Oh, they are so cute! I have fond memories of our chickens growing up. One of these days... maybe with a little bigger yard. You just can't beat home grown chicken and eggs.
