Valentijnsverrassing

(english version? Please scroll down!)

Valentijnscake
(1 klein hartvormig cakeje)
80 g boter
80 g suiker
1 tl vanillesuiker
2 eieren
80 g bloem
20 g maizena
1 tl bakpoeder
40 g gemalen hazelnoot
30 g geraspte kokos
35 g kleine pure chocoladedruppels (of in stukje gehakte chocoladereep)

Happy Valentijnsdag.

Happy Valentine

Almost the 14th of februari, so Valentine's day is almost here and that asks for some kind of romantic gesture to a loved one. Because it's always fun to look and be inspired by others, I whole heartily participate in the " a heart for your valentine"-event that Zorra initiated. Thanks you again dear Zorra! I already saw lots of mouthwatering entries on your blog!

So it's all about heartshape... well the heart shaped baking mold I bought last week at Lidl, so now it's time to think about what to make in it. It's essential to make something that the receiver loves of course, so I choose a few of my husbands favorite ingredients: coconut, chocolate and (hazel)nuts. And me -in an attempt to be filosofical- thinking that love shouldn't be superficial, I made the cake in two layers. I think that the element of surprise is important to keep things fibrant in your love life, so I decided to stick a few marzipan pieces, coated in chocolate in the center. The final thing covered in melted chocolate... wow this will certainly be a hit!

I proudly presented the whole thing to my husband: "That's very nice".
Then cut a slice,..on the spot where the hidden marzipan surprise was of course!: "mm, very nice."
What do you mean very nice???.. "Well, véry nice".
And that's it?.. yes it was.
(Sigh....) He always says: "Very nice", so where is the surprise, affection and admiration??
Next week we're celebrating our 15th anniversary, maybe after all that time this surprise wasn't surprising enough. Next time I should bake an exploding bomb, that would probably have more impact!

Valentine's cake
(1 small heart shaped cake)
80 g butter
80 g sugar

1 tsp vanilla sugar
2 eggs
80 g all-purpose flour
20 g cornstarch
1 tsp baking powder
40 g ground hazelnuts
30 g grated coconut
35 g semi-sweet small chocolate chips
4 marzipan pieces

Optional for decoration: 100 g melted semi-sweet chocolate and some red sugarhearts.

Grease and four a small heart shaped baking mold. Preheat the oven to 340ºF.

Mix the butter, sugar and vanilla sugar light and creamy. Add the eggs, ona at the time and beat well after each one.
Sift the flour, cornstarch and baking powder and stir until just combined.
Divide the batter in two equal portions. Add the coconut to one and stir and mix the chocolate chips in the other half.

Scoop one ot the batter (doesn't matter which one first) in the mold and place the marzipan pieces on it. Scoop the 2nd batter over it and level the top. Bake in the middle of the oven on 340ºF -30-40 minutes, test with a cake tester. Let cool in the mold for 5-10 minutes, then turn on a wire rack to cool.

Melt the chocolate au-bain-marie and pour over. Give it an optional sprinkle of coloured sugar hearts.
Happy Valentine.

Ah, I know what you mean about the "very nice." If only they knew what troubles we went through...

Then again, I like mine because she's very nice too :)

(Gemeen he hihi) Groetjes Wil V

Lien: the cake looks like a love fantasy. I would be awed with such a cake.
That mold is causing me serious lust.
Surprise: He needs a jolt. Do something out of character. Maybe that would get his attention.
I just don't get it with nice.

Thank you for your participation.

hi there, i might sound silly to ask this question but i mean it. where can i buy all purpose flour in here? mostly i saw in the supermarkets like albert hein, jumbo & etc are patent bloem, zelfrijzend bakmeel & tarwe bloem. thanks in advance. i like all ur entries specially on baking!

Thanks for your compliments!
There is no such thing as a silly question when you want to know something, so you can always ask away!!

All-purpose flour is a normal flour, what is called 'tarwebloem' here. It's not exactly the same because the all purpose flour in the states is stronger than our 'tarwebloem'. You can use this to bake normal bread (also you can use it for cakes, cookies..)
Patentflour is even weaker and therefor not suitable for baking bread, but ver good for cakes, cookies etc. (things were you use baking powder to let it rise)

If you want to bake more advanced breads, that p.e. contain a lot of water (like ciabatta, pizza) or a lot of butter (brioches) or bread with a long slow rise (ciabatta, french baguettes, sour dough loaves etc) you will have much better results with a stronger flour. For this you'll have to look around at mills that sell flour in your neighbourhood (just google on 'korenmolen'), or at online shops (I buy at Hoeve Eiteweert in Groningen, they have "farina d'oro bianco doppio 00" that is the strongest flour I found here so far)

Well I hope that this will be of some help to you.
Happy Baking,
Cheers Lien
