Would you be my Valentine?

(nederlands? Scroll naar beneden!)

I've been posting about Valentine's day in recent years with a cake or sweets, but for me Valentine is really just an excuse to think of something to make or bake. Having said that the 14th of februari is a very special date for me and it'll always be a day that I'll never let pass without special thoughts. Not because of Valentine but 'cause it's the birthday of my best friend. I've known her since we were about 4 or 5 years old and we've been close ever since. Unfortunately we don't live close to eachother these last years, but like things go in real friendship, it doesn't matter(even though I would love to live closer by). If we haven't seen or spoke to eachother for a while, we just continue talking as if we saw eachother the day before. So I decided to make this "Valentine's treat" just for her. A shame I can't bring it over my dear, but I'm sure my family will help devour it in your honor! Happy birthday C! Looking forward to our little trip in march ;-).

C's Birthday-Valentine pie

(PRINT recipe)

340 g AP-flour
1 tsp baking powder
200 g sugar
1 tsp vanilla sugar
65 g butter
2 tsp grated orange zest
1 tsp orange extract (optional)
1 egg
± 50 ml orange juice

200 g marzipan (ready rolled or thinly rolled yourself)
100- 150 g semi-sweet chocolate
(some decorations to sprinkle on top, optional)

Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla sugar, butter, orange zest and optional extracts and the egg until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add enough orange juice so it just comes together. Knead quickly by hand to a stiff dough. Wrap in clingfilm and place in the fridge for an hour.

Prepare you baking tin (heart shaped if you like) by greasing and lightly flouring it.

Roll out the marzipan if it isn't ready rolled quite thin. Make a stencil of the shape of the pan. Cut out three marzipan shapes (hearts in my case).

Preheat the oven to 400ºF (200ºC).

Roll out the dough (about 4 mm thick) using a light flouring on the rolling pin, worksurface and your hands and ease it into the piedish. Don't stretch it. Cover bottom and sides and cut off the excess. Now place a marizpan heart on the bottom.
Take the scraps of the dough and roll out again. Cut out three (heart) shapes using the stencil. And fill the pie dish alternating marzipan and dough layers. End with a layer of dough and press it on to the top of the doughsides.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Place it on a hot oven stone (or a dark baking sheet that you've heated during baking in the oven), place the dish on top and bake for another 15-20 minutes so the bottom also gets a chance to bake crispy.

In the meantime you can (if you feel like it) make some decorations with the left over marzipan. A rose or a ribbon or little hearts.... make it as easy or difficult as you like.

Take the pie out of the oven, let cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then take it out and let cool on a wire rack. When completely cool, melt some chocolate and pour it over, also glazing the sides. Sprinkle on decorations if you like. Stick your marzipan decorations on when the chocolate had cooled slightly.

Happy Valentine!

C's Verjaardags-Valentijnstaart

(recept PRINTEN)

340 g bloem
2 tl bakpoeder
200 g suiker
1 tl vanille suiker
65 g boter
2 tl geraspte sinaasappelschil
1 ei
± 50 ml sinaasappelsap

200 g marsepein (kant en klaar uitgerold of zelf dun uitrollen)
100- 150 g pure chocolade

Hartelijk gefeliciteerd!!
