Bananas and caramel
(in 't Nederlands? Naar beneden scrollen aub!)
It better for me to shop with a list, not only it takes less time, it also prevents me from coming home with something that is already there in large quantities (or something that I don't really need or should have bought). But a list only really works when you check your pantry and fridge before you go to the store. And I must admit... I'm not as orginised as I used to be. So when I returned home recently with a large bunch of bananas (on sale, so take some extra!)... I found there were still four bananas trying to get a brown tan -very successfully I might add- on the fruit bowl.
Our son hates bananas.. and everything that has been close to one, so that is one less to get them out of the way. I decided to make some banana ice cream, you need very ripe bananas for that, so these should be perfect. And it was.... and I suddenly remembered that in my younger years during my studies my friend and I always went to a little shop that selled banana soft ice cream (with a chocolated coating for me) and I was really hooked on that stuff! And although this isn't soft ice cream it really took me back in time with a smile on my face. Yummy! Then I saw Jude's posting (from "apple pie, pastis & paté") with "Dulce de leche ice cream" and I was inspired. Caramel and banana.... great combo! We had both ice creams for our Christmas dinner dessert and everybody loved it!!
(about 1 liter)
180 ml semi-skimmed milk
180 g sugar
250 ml (whipping) cream
Place the bananas, milk and sugar in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the cream and mix well. Put in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
Churn in your ice machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Scoop in a plastic container and freeze for a few more hours to firm up.
Serve with... whipped cream, fresh banana slices and maybe some dulce de leche ice cream. Enjoy!
(adapted from "Italian Ice Cream"- C. Bardi)
180 ml halfvolle melk
180 g suiker
250 ml slagroom

I love banana ice cream! And my poor machine hasn't seen any action in such a long time..
I must make this soon! It looks wonderful.
Oh Lien, why? Why do that to me? With bananas (as with pretty much anything here) it's hit or run in this house. They get eaten either very quickly or not at all. They hate bananabread. They might love banana ice cream. I love caramel.
The ice bucket goes in the fridge. Now.
Zo heb je die bananen toch nog nuttig kunnen gebruiken! Ziet er alleszins heerlijk uit!
Do I need this? Gad and it's 70° here. Banana ice cream and caramel, what could be better after all the excess of the holidays . . . goodness!
Oh, that looks so delicious. I'll just have to wait till a good opportunity to present this to my family; my husbands already says I'm killing him!
