Happy Mother’s Day

happy mothers day roos

I wish all mothers over the world (even though some countries have a different date for Mothers Day) the best Mothersday. I’m having a lovely day. Kids were up early, set the table, toasted bread and boiled some eggs. Went out very early to pick some flowers.  They’ve been busy whispering and sneaking upstairs a lot this last week, fortunately the both had a week off from school (may holidays) and as you’ll see they made good use of it!

I was excorted out of bed with a little present to find breakfast ready. On the table was a display my daughter made: A landscape with a lovely chickencoop… and you know we just love our chickens over here.

Moederdag 2010

chickencoop Chocolate chicks  everywhere, a blue fish in the pond, which is not a hairclip as I first thought, but a pencil sharpener (he spits out the bits and pieces when you open it up after sharpening). A tree with a secret squirrel hiding place, where I found a decorated cloths pin to keep my papers in order. The egg in the coop contained an egg-warmer. So cute.

Later I got these tealight glasses my boy made at school, love those! A velvet heart with a magnet in it. Some shampoo, two bags with bath bubble soap…. am I spoiled or what!!!

I just love it when they make their own things to give, there is no shop bought gift that can beat that. I wish you all a great mother’s day too, mine is the best ever!

Shoot!

engels.amer vlag I did it, finally. After dreaming about it, having been just a pinch away from buying it several times... studying the brands, models and prices.... I finally saw a offer I couldn't refuse and I bought it: My first digital SLR-camera. Yay! It had to be a choice between what I want and what I could afford, but when I grow up and I'll be famous and rich of course, I'll buy an even better one.

I'm very happy with it, though I haven't been able to play around with it a lot these last weeks. I wanted to follow a course, but those all had already started, so I'll try out all the basics myself and then take one after the summer holidays when they start again. I am going to attend an one-day workshop in May though at the Photography-school, hope that'll answer some of my questions, but the best way to learn is to use it a lot. It really takes a lot of getting used too. I used my very, very good advanced compact (Canon Powershot G7) before, that could great close-ups, was quick and sharp. With my new SDLR I found that I will probably need one or two addition lenses (macro and 70-200 mm or something), it just came with a kitlens (18-55 mm). So this will be an expensive hobby.... but a fun one. Let's just hope we'll see the difference ;)

Vlag nl klein Lekker schieten

Spring is on its way.........

engels.amer vlag Although it's still cold here in Holland, just a few degrees above zero in the day, I know spring is coming. Here's why:

One of our chickens has laid her first egg of this year! A lovely small and pointy egg.. well of course the first one of the year has to make way for the next eggs to come. 42 grams, they are small chickens so that's normal, though they get bigger up to 50 grams from this chicken.

Our chicken Nera: "Yes it was me!"

We hope the other two will follow soon. I think it's a miracle everytime you stick your head around the corner of their coop and there is a little treasure laid. Wonderful cakes with an intense golden color can be made soon. Let spring begin!

Vlag nl klein De lente komt...

BBB post

Sorry Babes, buddies and other visitors. My BBB-post will be on later; tomorrow or this weekend. I still have to bake them, because I've been busy with (especially) our sick boy, who made his first visit to school again just for this morning (yay!), couldn't get out of the house for groceries and ran flat out of yeast.

That never happened to me before, ever! But this morning I stocked up my cupboards again, yeast included... so I hope I can bake tomorrow! See you later and don't forget to check out the other babes that have been baking this wonderful recipe!!!

Baking again, cursed again and an award

(In het Nederlands? Scroll naar beneden!)

engels.amer klein I have a hard time starting to get back in the normal routine after returning from Italy. Don't really have a reason, but just didn't feel like doing anything and just feel a bit down. I've started baking again after the holidays, there must be bread... and some cakes and stuff too of course, but I just couldn't get myself in blogging about it. I spent more than enought time behind the laptop (we're even wireless since a few days), but I just threw my time away doing... I don't really know what. But here I am, trying to get back into the normal routine. Our boy started school again yesterday (daughter still has a week off), so that should at least get me out of bed in time :).

I think there is a computer curse in this house, after so many
problems with the old one, so much time to get the new laptop working, last week we finally became wireless and finally were able to print again... and then my laptop turned black, just like that. Just dead black. *sigh* this is not helping my mood one bit. So this week back to the computershop and we'll see if we have to start all over again and if this is the final curse. The old one (which I am using now) started to go black too every now and then after we got back, so there's no telling how long I can still communicate. I have no more to say to you all right now and I'll leave you this wonderful recipe of a pie with apples and strawberries, just so you know I'm still here, but not a 100%.

I can't include any pictures (yet) because I didn't copy them yet to my external drive. You can see a slice of the endresult in the header, so that's at least something.
This reminds me of a joke:
"What do you call sawdust on the head of a moron?"

- external memory
Ah well (this lame joke shows what state I'm in I guess).... here's the recipe (If I can I will add photo's later)..

UPDATE: It's two days later now since I wrote this, the other older computer died as well and I couldn't continue this post. But the good news is my laptop has been reanimated in the meantime and I can finish (finally!!) this post including the pictures Yay!

Apple Strawberry pie with mint
(a 9 inch pie)
Apple strawberry pie with mint (p.68)
(PRINT recipe)
1 recipe American double crust
3 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
500 g strawberries
100 g sugar
4 TBsp cornstarch
Pinch of nutmeg
1 TBsp lemon juice
grated zest of 1/2 lemon
½ tsp rosewater
10 mint leaves, shredded
1 egg yolk (for brushing)
Preheat the oven to 400ºF (200ºC).

Roll out half of the dough (the larger 'half') and place it in the pie dish, leaving the dough drape over the side of the pan. Refrigerate while you're making the filling.

Mixed the slices apples, mintleaves and the strawberries sliced thick in a bowl. Mix the sugar, cornstarch and nutmeg together in another small bowl. Mix the sugar, cornstarch and nutmeg together in another small bowl. Stir the lemon juice, zest and rosewater in the fruits. Sprinkle the dry ingredients over the fruits, toss and fill the pastry case.

Roll out the other piece of dough, you can either place it on top (and make some steam ventilation holes) or make a lattice topping by cutting thick ribbons and placing them on the filling crosswise.

Push the rims together and make a nice edge with a forkpattern or sculpt into an upstanding ridge.
Wisk the egg yolk with 1 TBsp water and brush the pastry with it.

Place the pie dish on a larger sheet covered with aluminium foil (juices will start to bubble and you don't need to clean your oven after baking).

Bake in an oven for 30 minutes, reduce the heat to 375ºF (180ºC) and bake for another 40 minutes until golden brown and the juices bubbling.

Leave to cool at least 2 hours before serving on a cooling rack.

Oh yeah something else that's long overdue in the meantime....while I was on holiday I got a blogger-award from always fun and cheerful co-blogger Jamie from "Life's feast". Well of course I accept with a blush and a bow, it always gives a boost to be thought off, thanks Jamie!
There are some rules to go with it (I copied/pasted them from Jamie's blog)

1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.

I am passing on this award to 7 inspiring food bloggers :

1. Aparna from "My diverse Kitchen", talking about creative, look at all the vegetarian dishes she makes!

2. Natashya from "Living in the kitchen with puppies", of course I've become to know her because she's a (BB)Babe, but she cooks the most wonderful things and I just want to spend a day (or more!) in her kitchen to see her do that all (and taste some too if I may!).

3. Karen from "Bake my day!", she was the inspiration for me to start a blog in the first place and is very kreative in her writing.

4. Susan from "Wild Yeast", who is being creativ with yeast in a big way and let us enjoy it in her 'Yeast Spotting'

5. Laura from "Tiramisù", where you can find not only the most delicious dishes, beautiful pictures, but the cutest chicks ever too!

6. Zainab & Hameeda, two sisters in Saudia Arabia, who make the most delicious and mouthwatering things with oriental flavorings in "Arabic Bites", they are real kitchenwizzards.

7. Marjoke from "Company in my kitchen" a fellow dutch foodblogger, who blogs in english and bakes her fair share of beautiful breads.

This was the easy part, now I have to think of 7 things about me that might be of interest to you. I really have to think hard here.... I could tell you that I'm no good in talking about myself a lot, but most probably know that already... Did I hear someone in the back saying you didn't know??? OK, saved by the voice in the backrow, so this is 1.

2. I won't leave the house without make-up on (unless there is a fire in the middle of the night).

3. People have been saying to/about me all my life, that I can do anything (effortless they think).. I don't believe them at all. I just can/could do lots of things a bit.

4. I studied at an Academy of Arts, I graduated in painting/drawing and teaching Art-history.

5. I play the piano, just a bit.

6. I use up a lot of bandage, because I've had exzema since birth, these days it mostly effects my hands, which limits me in the things I can do. Every bread I knead hurts my skin. (that's why I only play the piano a bit too)

7. I seem to have lost my ability of being organised, that I was 'famous' for. Midlife crisis I guess. At least I can still count to 7 :)

Apple strawberry pie with mint
(recept PRINTEN)

1x Amerikaans korstdeeg recept
3 appels, geschild en in plakjes
500 g aardbeien
100 g suiker
4 el maizena
snuf nootmuskaat
1 el citroensap
geraspte schil van 1/2 citroen
½ tl rozenwater
10 muntbladeren, in dunne reepjes

I'm back!!

(Nederlands? scroll naar beneden)
engels.amer klein What a silence here for 3 long weeks while we were having our holidays in Italy. I managed to prefab the post about the Tahini swirls -Natashya really made a great choice with these breads- so maybe it looked like I was around, but I wasn't.
No internet, no TV (well there was a TV, but we didn't watch it), felt like totally having been cut of the world, which really can be a blessing sometimes. But I missed you all and don't think I'll be able to catch up with all the posts that are in my reader and all the emails, but I'll try anyway, so if you've been waiting for a reply.. just wait a little longer :).

We had a wonderful time, we stayed outside of Fano (Le Marche) for the first two weeks... and it was hot....real hot 36, 37, 38 yes we even reached just over 40°C! So of course we spent some days at the beach, but managed to visit a lot of places too, like Ravenna, Ferrara, Bologna (really loved Bologna), Urbino, Comacchio and even another country: San Marino.

I didn't cook much during the holidays because it was just too hot. An old man nearby gaves us a bucket full of green figs that had to be eaten there on the spot. There were to many to eat that quick. Figs are hard to come by here in the Netherlands and expensive too, so I couldn't just throw them out. We went to the supermarket bought sugar (couldn't find any pectine or so), jars and I stood there cooking jam and figs on syrup on a gas stove while it was 40°C. Afterwards I wouldn't have done that again... I think.

For the last week we drove over to the Como Lake were we stayed in a house in Nesso built on the mountain slope. Boy o boy did we have a heavenly view from each and every window!!

View from our holiday house on Lago di Como
But boy o boy did we have a hellish driveway. It was so steep and make a 90 degree turn, the first time I thought we were going straight down through the railing. Only three weels touched the ground and we don't have a four by four. But we soon found out down was the easy part... getting up: slipping wheels, burning rubber..., no way with 4 people in it, let alone packed full to get back home. No other place anywere to park. This was really scary and the first night I had several nightmares where I saw the car driving into a ravine with our kids standing out there watching it happen and being left behind on their own.
On our last day we asked our neighbours above us if we could park on their spot, that was alright and so we carried all the bags and lots of (*cough*) some stuff* that I bought, up the hill and packed it there. We left 01.30 AM (because we hardly slept anyway, we decided to leave earlier than planned) and were home here just before 02.00 PM and had a good trip because of that; no traffic jams, just a 15 minute wait at the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland and higher speed than usual on the German "Autobahn". So the lack of sleep turned out to be a blessing because it was "Black Saturday" where all of Europe leaves or returnes on the same day for or from their holiday.
So I'm back. As is was a wet day here yesterday -can't even pretend that we were still on holiday with this rain- all the washing is shaped into a mountain in the garage, we'll get to it. Better get some shopping done now to fill the fridge. Not ready yet to bake something, but you know that will only be matter of days.

Hope you all had a great holiday and those who are still looking forward in going: have fun and travel carefully!

*PS. In case you're wondering what things I bought that made the car heavier than it was on the way there: some books of course (3 on bread, 1 on sweet baking, 1 on gelato, 1 for reading in Italian, several magazines... on cooking), a colomba mold! yes finally success in the most obscure little hardware shop of all places. The assistant had to go out to wherever it was to get it, because it's not in season obviously, I bought some small paper molds too. I always buy different kind of flours and other foods of course; cheeses, bresaola, dried fruits, nuts, olive oils, wines, liquors, amarena cherries....ecc....ecc.

Stacks of problems and bakes

Sorry, it's still a bit silent here. With my last post it all seemed to be going in the right direction: new laptop, man included (for installation purposes only) to transfer all my photo's and documents to the laptop, the old one (pc not man!) was to be cleaned and repared, a new screen and a new printer.

Well that didn't went as planned. He started transferring things, how speedy these people click away I can't follow. I thought I saw some things copied twice and/or three times, but really it was all OK, no worries. Then the laptop acted weird, he couldn't find out what it was, so took it with him. Two days later it was fixed, another man came to bring it by, didn't know what was done or not done with the transferring (and I didn't know either to be honest, except for the 'no-worries' part), so he left. Thinking that I was very clever probably to do the rest myself.

So I started to try and get some order in my pictures and documents. For hours and hours and days. Let's be short about it... it's total chaos, my whole system lost, lots of pictures missing. All the ones that I was going to post about, so that's why there is no new post yet. All my Bread Baking Babes badge pictures and stuff to make the buddie badge for this month.... nowhere to be found, so please keep baking buddies, but have a little patience, I'll get you a badge as soon as I can. Pictures in the wrong place, sometimes 4 copies in different places... ah well you get the picture (I didn't). The printer also stopped working. This friday a man will come... they said.... I called them not to delete anything from the old computer, because I need my pictures... No worries, they said... yeah right!

But I do worry... I know there's worse in the world... I know... I know I live on even if the whole thing expodes (well as long as I don't sit too close when that happens)... but it's still frustrating. I finally found my 'stack'-pictures that I put together for the CLICK!-edition of this month, so that is a post that I can make... and here is it.

Another edition of Jugalbandi's CLICK!, it's all about stacks this time, and anyone who ever baked and photographed cookies, probably has a 'stack'-picture in their archives. I never knew that stacks could be horizontal as well, I learn something new everyday.

When I choose a picture I search my archives for all sorts of stacks that I place together to get a quick view of what's suitable and what's not. Sometimes our kids like to pick their own favorites. They loved this picture of the coconut cookie stacks. "How did you get them to balance like that??" They thought I was really handy, until I told them I'd put wooden squewers through the cookies to keep them from falling down... hehehe.

I picked the photo of Rosendals Knäckebröt, a Swedish cracker, that we baked last year with the Bread Baking Babes to enter this months Click!
I like this picture a lot. It's a bit rustic, pure and simple, which fits the Swedish product I think. Sometimes less is more as we all know and I think this one benefits from that idea.
Good thing I know know that stacks can be more than just vertical, so I could send this one in. You still can join the event too, find all the details here.
