Om je tanden in te zetten....

(in English? Scroll down please)

Get your teeth stuck in this...

When I saw some blood oranges in the shop, I didn't hesitate in buying them because I still wanted to try that special recipe from Karen at "Bake My Day!" for Blood Orange Curd.

Got right to work when I returned home, pressing out all these lovely red oranges and making the curd... well, that is really, really, really good! I had about 2,5 jars and 1 day later there was only one jar left. You really have to restrain yourself not to take a spoon and eat it just like that! Highly recommendable!

I still had some juice left after making the curd, so I went on the net to find me a nice recipe. BTW This was before I had tasted the curd, otherwise I would have made some more right away. I had read about the
3-year anniversary of blog-events at Zorra's "1 x umrühren bitte" with "cake" in the starring role. Hip hip hoorah for you Zorra, I always love to participate in your great blog events, I hope there'll be many more!

So I wanted to make something cakelike with bloodoranges. And after a search on the net I found a lovely cake at the German site of Betty Bossi, maybe more appropriate for Halloween, but it looked so tasty, I couldn't wait to make it. It carries the name "Dracula cake", which becomes clear when you cut slices of this lovely moist cake. But even without the blood orange jelly it tastes terrific, no wonder with all that mascarpone....

Dracula cake
(1 loaf shaped cake)
500 g Mascarpone
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 vanilla pod, seeds only
2 large eggs
1 2/3 cup + 2 TBsp all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
100 g ground almonds

jelly:
200 ml blood orange juice
Pectine or sugar to make jam/jelly (amount as stated on the product you have)

Preheat the oven to 360ºF. Grease and flour a loaf tin .

Stir the mascarpone cheese, sugar and vanilla (extract and seeds) with a (hand held) mixer. Add the eggs, one by one, until fully incorporated. Stir in the sieved flour, baking powder and ground almonds (don't overstir).

Spoon the batter in the prepared loaf tin and bake for about 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Take it out of the oven, let cool for 10 minutes in the tin. Take the cake out to cool further on a wire rack. Once cooled take a knitting needle and prick the cake all over.

Make the blood orange jelly according to the instructions on the pectine or special jam/jelly sugar you use. (that differs from country to country). Place the jelly into a piping bag with a smooth tip, about 3 mm wide and fill all the holes with the jelly.

The dracula effect will be visible when you cut slices of the cake and you see where he has bitten... Enjoy!

@ Tanna: I did not make this cake with the blood orange curd, so if you make Karen's wonderful recipe, just eat all jars and make the cake for halloween with blood orange jelly... I bet strawberry or raspberry jam would do the tricks as well!

Thanks Zorra, is Betty Bossi a well known baker in germany? I never heard of her before.

HI Katia, Thanks for your compliments! You speak a bit of dutch I see, good job!

Hi Lien,

your cake looks delicious. Betti Bossi is a ghost Swiss woman, she doesn't exist.
